Piranha euthanased at National Aquarium due to new regulations

The elderly and sick piranha at the National Aquarium in Napier were put down last month. Napier City Council chief executive Wayne Jack said the 21 flesh-eating fish were put down "humanely" to comply with new Ministry for Primary Industries regulations around the containment of dangerous species. The council issued a statement saying "Our piranha were elderly, had health issues and couldn't safely be exposed to the risks of moving them, and in order to comply with the new regulations, our piranha were euthanased in November 2019". Located on Marine Parade, the National Aquarium of New Zealand, formerly Napier Aquarium, was started at a different site in 1957. Piranha is a predatory omnivorous freshwater fish from South America.
