Shane, the Black transgender soul singer who became a pioneering musician while playing on Yonge Street and filled nightclubs throughout the city in the 1960s, has died. The Jackie Shane album Any Other Way, which was nominated for best historical album at this year's Grammy Awards. In Toronto, Shane is among several influential musicians whose faces have been painted on a giant mural on Yonge St. Bowman said Toronto and the rest of the world should remember Shane as an incredible soul singer and performer, but also as someone who played an important role in uniting communities.
