Members of the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) went on an indefinite hunger strike on Sunday, demanding formation of a central, independent Physiotherapy Council. More than 700 physiotherapists from across the country gathered at Jantar Mantar to express their solidarity for the cause, and said the demand for a regulatory council has remained unfulfilled for over five decades now. "We hope that our effort of 'Amaran Anshan' draws the attention of the Central government, and the Central Physiotherapy Council is established for the betterment of society at the earliest," IAP President Dr Umasankar Mohanty said. Earlier as well, the IAP members have submitted several memorandums, along with petitions, to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and the Union Health Minister. After 64 years, 296 colleges offer Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy, 116 colleges offer Masters degree, and 16 colleges and 11 universities offer PhD in the course.
