Photos were key evidence in Hutch trial but did not cause case to collapse

The trial of Patrick Hutch for the murder of David Byrne was highly unusual in that photographs were the key evidence. In the case that collapsed on Wednesday, the DPP contended the man dressed as a woman was Patrick Hutch (26), Champion’s Ave, Dublin 1. But the two Garda members who did identify Patrick Hutch insisted they had done so independently of each other. He argued the Hutch family were being linked to the shooting and that the two Garda members knew Patrick Hutch better than other family members. This, he believed, meant it was more likely they would name Patrick Hutch rather than another family member.
