Phivolcs launches GeoMapperPH – The Manila Times

THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Thursday launched its newly developed web-based tool called the GeoMapperPH, which primarily updates users of natural hazards associated with their location. Developed mainly by DoST-Phivolcs, GeoMapperPH is a geographic information system (GIS)-based system designed to sustain and easily maintain the data flow, indicating the house and building structures and locations of people and their communities, Solidum told The Manila Times in a text message. Asked if this was patterned after other countries’ similar tool, Solidum said its methods and data fields were unique. It left around 1,200 people killed and produced a 125-kilometer-long ground rupture along the Digdig segment of the Philippine Fault, Phivolcs said. With only 12 seismic stations when the earthquake monitoring function was transferred from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration in 1984, Phivolcs now has 104 stations, Solidum said.
