THE 32nd anniversary of what is now known as the Four Eights (8888) uprising in Burma (as what is now Myanmar was then officially known) has been “commemorated” in a few parts of the country in a somewhat low-key manner. Supremely successfulContrast this with the supremely successful Philippine People Power uprising, which occurred between Feb. 22 to 25, 1986. Unlike Marcos, Ne Win did not contest multiparty elections at all. In his 600-page biography of Ne Win, Taylor discusses the events of and July 7 and 8 in about one-and-a-half pages. There have been disappointments, perhaps inevitable, in Philippine politics since the what is also known as the EDSA People Power Revolution of February 1986.
