Philanthropists’ vision reflected in looping skating rink beneath the Gardiner

Hundreds of skaters embraced Toronto’s deep freeze on Saturday, testing the city’s newest public space during its grand opening beneath the Gardiner. Larry Blanco of Whitby brought his 5-year-old son, David, for his first spin on an outdoor ice trail. Miguel Melo, 21, came from East York to “ice break” for the crowd with the Toronto Ice Skate Group, which he co-founded three years ago. Designed by PUBLIC WORK and Ken Greenberg Consultants, The Bentway will have three programming cycles: winter, spring/summer and fall. She’s worried about a sharp turn near the end of the skate trail that is marked by a sign cautioning users to slow down.
