One of the most pleasant aspects of covering tournaments has always been talking football with Arsenal’s greatest manager. Arsène Wenger guarded his time preciously through the season, but could often be found in the summer months at games, or between games, travelling to, travelling from, time on his hands and happy to chat. You’d end up in the same airport lounge and he would sit and have coffee, and talk. About what he’d seen and what he thought, and he was candid and open, and none of it made its way into the paper. But I do remember what he thought about Tottenham Hotspur’s big signing of 2008.
