Following Kepa’s poor performances last season, Frank Lampard asked Chelsea’s hierarchy to sign a new goalkeeper this summer to challenge the Spaniard. Cech, who spent two years at Rennes before joining Chelsea in 2004, played a key role in recommending the Senegal international to Lampard. Cech also highlighted the qualities Mendy possesses which convinced him to recommend the deal to Lampard.
