Petitions against Pujith, Hemasiri to be heard on Jan 20 next year

NewsThe Supreme Court today (Oct 2) ordered that the fundamental rights petitions against the Police Chief and the former Defence secretary over the Easter Sunday attacks would be heard on January 20, 2020. Court had granted leave to proceed for these petitions after ruling that the fundamental rights set out in Article 12 (1) of the constitution had been violated by the terrorist bombings. The order was issued by a seven-member judge bench headed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and comprising Buwaneka Aluvihare, Sisira de Abrew, Priyantha Jayawardena, Prasanna Jayarawardena, L.T.B. Dehideniya and Murdu Fernando. Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, and former Defence secretary Hemasiri Fernando have been named as respondents in these petitions over their failure to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks.
