However opinion has been heavily divided among fans, and Crusaders' supporter Shane Cannons started an online petition calling on the franchise to keep its name. "One of the contentious issues that has been brought up in the aftermath of the Christchurch attacks is the name of our rugby team – the Crusaders. "That's not necessarily connected to the Crusaders rugby team … [but] on a symbolic level, absolutely. "It might be that Muslim community says 'No that's fine'.
