Petition challenging Gotabhaya's Sri Lankan citizenship fixed for next month

NewsThe Appeal Court today (Sept 30) ordered that a petition challenging the Sri Lankan citizenship of Presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa would be heard next month. Civil activists Professor Chandragupta Thenuwara and Gamini Viyangoda had filed the petition seeking a court order declaring that Mr. Rajapaksa had not lawfully obtained his Sri Lankan citizenship. Court ordered that the petition would be heard on October 2, 3, and 4. However, lawyers appearing for Gotabhaya Rajapaksa informed court that they would file preliminary objections against the case. The Controller General of the Immigration and Emigration Department, Commissioner General of the Department for Registration of Persons, and the Ministers of Public Administration, and Internal Affairs have been named as respondents to the petition.
