Peters and NZ First have held the balance of power three times before. Tonight's result is another twist in Peters' political career, which began when he first ran for Parliament aged 30 and standing for National in Northern Maori. Peters took a $100 bet with broadcaster Mike Hosking in the lead-in to polling day, saying NZ First would clear the 5 per cent threshold and return to Parliament.
