Thiel telling Republicans he’s proud to be gay probably isn’t going to change the debate around that issue in America. On Thursday, that same room of Republicans cheered when billionaire PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel told them he's proud to be gay. It was also the capstone to a week filled with speeches from Republican leaders mentioning gay rights in some form or another. As I wrote earlier Thursday:Just about every night this week, at least one Republican speaker has mentioned gay rights in his or her speech. His core message when it came to gay rights was that they are "a distraction" from the more pressing issues of the day, fixing the economy and fighting terrorism.
