Perfectly preserved newspaper reveal a slice of 1960s life


During a local house refurbishment, someone pulled up an old carpet and found underneath sheets of perfectly preserved newspapers, probably laid there originally as insulation. "In a city the size of Palmerston North," it states, "one feature, apart from a city hall, is oddly lacking. The story of the collection that would one day evolve into Te Manawa, today's vital city museum of science, art and history, was to be a long, sometimes frustrating one. In entertainment news for all tastes, the Palmerston North Little Theatre was performing the musical Lock Up Your Daughters and the Repertory Theatre running the play Critics' Choice. Local columnist Henry Temple wrote that Palmerston North needed more flowering trees – especially the jacaranda – "to grace our avenues".
