IPOH: The Perak government will carry out a study to look into the impact of the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project on fishermen and marine resources in the state. It was reported that the PSR project was announced by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow earlier this month. Penang Forum, a loose coalition of NGOs, has also started a petition, collecting over 12,000 signatures, against the project. Among the concerns voiced was that the project would affect the livelihood of about 6,000 fishermen and 4,800 inshore fishermen in Penang and that sand mining activities could affect the marine eco-system. "The concerns include erosion at mangrove swamps in the area and sand mining activities that could affect the marine eco-system there.
