Aphthous ulcer (also called canker sore) is a specific type of stress-related painful mouth ulcer or sore. People that develop very large, severe mouth ulcers and fever alongside mouth infection need doctor’s attention. Doctor’s attention is also needed for non-painful mouth ulcer that has lasted longer than three weeks and for spreading ulcer in the mouth. Persistent solitary mouth ulcer associated with cough and enlarged, matted neck lymph nodes call for TB and HIV/AIDs screening. The mild traumatic ulcer and minor aphthous ulcer usually resolve with frequent warm saline rinse applied for a few days.
