Brian Marshall, 75, came within minutes of drowning after trying to rescue one of his two Jack Russells from the dung pile. He managed to save pooch Bella while pet Archie stayed at a safe distance but found himself trapped and sinking into the slurry. He was pulled free by emergency teams outside the village of Ickwell, Beds, on Sunday after being stuck in the mud for more than an hour.
