Penang homes suffer structural damage as soil sinks following downpour

GEORGE TOWN: Eight families at Hong Seng Estate, Mount Erskine in Tanjung Tokong here are now living in fear after cracks appeared in their houses following a heavy downpour on Friday morning. The heavy rain, which began at about 12.30am, is believed to have loosened the soil in the area, causing it to sink – resulting in the houses shifting and perhaps losing their structural integrity. The incident has affected four houses located along one row, as well as four other homes nearby. The worst-affected premises is a corner lot house which has cracks in about one third of its structure. It was really devastating and scary at the same time," said 30-year-old Colin Tan Kim Phoay when met at the site.
