That’s according to the first annual report to the Peel Police Services Board under new regulations the province introduced guiding street checks. Between 2009 and 2011, Peel Regional Police officers recorded more than 26,000 street checks annually. Identifying information is collected and recorded in street checks, and the new regulations set out the circumstances and procedures for conducting them. Statistics reported by the Star showed that, between 2009 and 2011, Peel police conducted 159,303 street checks and Black people were three times more likely than white people to be stopped. In 2011, for instance, 5,830 street checks involved Black people, out of a total of 26,113 checks.
