With deployment of police and paramilitary forces at all 331 polling booths, the district administration ensured free and fair election in the constituency. The by-poll was necessitated after the sitting MLA Sarfaraj Alam vacated the seat to contest the Araria Lok Sabha by-poll. Earlier, Mohd Taslimuddin had represented the Jokihat Assembly seat five times while his second son Sarfaraj Alam had bagged the seat four times. The ruling party JD(U) fielded former village head Murshid Alam while the Opposition put up Shahnawaj Alam, younger brother of Sarfaraj Alam in the constituency. Independent MP from Madhepura, Pappu Yadav’s party Jan Adhikar Party (JAP) fielded Ghousul Azam for the seat.
