Peace icon who rallied women to boycott cooking for fighting men


Beatrice Kimani, a member of Rural Woman Peace Link, in Burnt Forest Uasin Gishu County. In Burnt Forest, Uasin Gishu County, where she lives, Kimani, a teacher, is known as a peace icon. When men were violently clashing and destroying property in the height of the violence, 13 years ago, Kimani rallied women to boycott cooking for their fighting husbands and sons. Beatrice Kimani was born in Nyeri, trained as a teacher; the job took her hundreds of kilometres away to Burnt Forest. In 2000, she decided to work as a volunteer at an organization called Rural Women Peace Link, juggling between teaching and sensitizing women and girls on retrogressive practices such as Female Genital Mutilation and peace.
