Thousands of hospital service workers will get pay rises of up to 40 per cent over the next three years. The pay rises, of between 24 and 40 per cent on workers' current rates will affect 3500 service workers, including cleaners, laundry workers, orderlies, catering and security staff across the 20 District Health Boards. Auckland Hospital cleaner Janet Pihanga is one of the staff who will get the 10 per cent immediate backdated pay rise just ahead of Christmas. E tū national hospitals co-ordinator Sam Jones said the pay rise would benefit those on the lowest rates the most through formal training. Another Auckland DHB cleaner, Lena Hiku said the pay rise was good for the workers' family life and their health.
