The UK is committed to supporting sustainable aviation development through its Jet Zero Strategy, which aims to achieve net-zero aviation emissions by 2050 through initiatives like sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), technological advancements, and infrastructure support. Executing the Jet Zero StrategyIn 2022, the UK government introduced its Jet Zero Strategy, a comprehensive roadmap aiming for net-zero aviation by 2050 and net-zero domestic flights and airports by 2040. Developing sustainable aviation fuelsAt the heart of the UK’s plan is sustainable aviation fuel, an alternative fuel that can reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 70% or more compared to conventional kerosene, and made from renewable or recycled sources, such as used cooking oil or household waste. The demand for sustainable fuel development across sectors will hopefully accelerate innovation and support the scaling of sustainable aviation fuels. It builds upon last year’s launch of the sustainable aviation fuel mandate and the upcoming implementation of the SAF revenue certainty mechanism.” ⁵By investing in advanced technologies, supporting the development of sustainable aviation fuels, and enhancing airport infrastructure, the UK is paving the way for a greener future in air travel.
