Fernandes, who joined United just over two years ago from Sporting Lisbon, has seen his role evolve in recent weeks under interim manager Ralf Rangnick, playing in a number of different positions. Since Rangnick's arrival at Old Trafford, Fernandes has operated on the left, as a number 10 and as a number eight. "I think he can do it in certain games, don't get me wrong, but it's only certain games," Scholes told BT Sport when asked if Fernandes could play in a deeper role. "I think he's much better in the number 10 position, floating around, getting on the ball and creating chances as he does."
