Patrick Ho Chi-ping's Africa bribery conviction upheld by US court

Disgraced former official Patrick Ho Chi-ping was convicted in the United States on seven counts of violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and money laundering in December 2018. The conviction of forrmer home affairs secretary Patrick Ho Chi-ping for paying bribes to the presidents of Chad and Uganda in a United Nations-linked conspiracy was upheld Tuesday by an appeals court in the United States. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled in the case of Dr Ho, finding he was properly convicted by a jury in December 2018 of paying bribes to the African presidents. Ho, who was secretary for home affairs from 2002 to 2007, returned to Hong Kong in June. On appeal, Ho said there was insufficient evidence for a conviction and cited various procedural errors, but a three-judge appeals panel disagreed.
