The idea is reportedly being floated as a way of funding extra security at airports. Cuts to the number of officers have been blamed for huge queues faced by passengers in the UK this summer. Some travellers have faced queues of up to two-and-a-half hours as they navigate passport control. However, passengers using British airports already face some of the highest tax rates in the world in air passengers duties. The number of full-time officers also fell by 10 per cent in two years up to 2016/17.
