Passages review: A steamy, impassioned film that plays out like a Greek tragedy

This rather Maoist stance would cut no mustard with the puckish anti-hero of Ira Sachs’ Passages, a steamy and impassioned film that pits a charming social anarchist against the pillars of bourgeois respectability. When we first meet Tomas (Franz Rogowski), a German director living in Paris, he’s putting the finishing touches to his latest arthouse film. In one of the film’s most excruciating scenes, Agathe cooks Sunday lunch in order to introduce Tomas to her parents. Ira Sachs’ mercilessly honest film plays out like a Greek tragedy, and gives compelling insights into the collective madness of love. The late DuCoque needs burying fast, and an odious TV clown called Alphonso (Ivan Kaye) has unleashed a ghastly plan.
