Teokotai Oropai Piho later told police the woman suffered the eye injury because she accidentally walked into his thumb. She had stayed away the previous night following an argument between the pair and had judged it safe to return. The victim suffered extensive swelling to her forehead and bruising to her stomach, legs, arms and torso. His explanation for the eye injury was that she had come towards him from behind, he had put his hand up and she had walked into his thumb.
