National MP Simon O'Connor, who chaired a committee that heard public submissions on assisted dying, said he opposed the bill, which allowed "state sanctioned killing". Parliament previously debated euthanasia in 2003, when former NZ First MP Peter Brown put up his "death with dignity" bill.
