There were passionate speeches in Parliament last night as MPs argued for and against assisted dying before casting their vote according to their conscience. National MP Simon O'Connor, who chaired a committee that heard public submissions on assisted dying, said he opposed the bill, which allowed "state sanctioned killing". Parliament previously debated euthanasia in 2003, when former NZ First MP Peter Brown put up his "death with dignity" bill.
