At a dawn event on Thursday, the flag was raised at Parliament to signal the anniversary, which saw gay sex decriminalised in New Zealand. Invited were people who were pivotal to the country’s road to law reform, including former Wellington Central MP Fran Wilde, who introduced the bill to Parliament. While sex between women was not illegal, many lesbians suffered the same social discrimination as gay men and were supporters of the reform movement.
