Parliament marks 35 years since gay sex decriminalised

The rainbow flag was raised on the forecourt of Parliament to celebrate 35 years since the passing of the Homosexual law reform act on Thursday morning. Parliament has marked 35 years since it passed the Homosexual Law Reform Act by raising the rainbow flag at its forecourt. At a dawn event on Thursday, the flag was raised at Parliament to signal the anniversary, which saw gay sex decriminalised in New Zealand. Invited were people who were pivotal to the country’s road to law reform, including former Wellington Central MP Fran Wilde, who introduced the bill to Parliament. While sex between women was not illegal, many lesbians suffered the same social discrimination as gay men and were supporters of the reform movement.
