Parishioners keeping an age-old Holy Week tradition alive - Nation

BUTTERWORTH: As Christians across the globe mark the beginning of Holy Week with Palm Sunday today, the parishioners of St Mark’s Church have come together to keep the age-old tradition of making palm crosses alive. Ong said she learnt to make palm crosses when she started worshipping at the church after she got married some 40 years ago. Sarawakian Rigson Anak Benson, 40, who was there with his wife and five children, said it was his first time making palm crosses. “Many churches have stopped making palm crosses and give out palm leaves instead because it can be taxing to prepare them for large congregations. “Palm branches are a widely recognised symbol of peace and victory.
