Palparan conviction a warning to human rights violators – Sison

LUCENA CITY – Exiled Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria Sison said Tuesday that the conviction of retired-Major Gen. Jovito Palparan could serve as a warning to human rights violators. “May the negative example of the butcher general Palparan serve as a deterrent to human rights violations by military and police officers,” Sison said in an online interview from his base in Utrecht, The Netherlands. “I congratulate the families of the victims, their lawyers from the National Union of Peoples´ Lawyers and all the organizations and activists that have actively waged the campaign for justice,” the CPP leader said. On Monday, Judge Alexander Tamayo of the Malolos Regional Trial Court handed out the guilty verdict to Palparan, co-accused Lt. Col. Felipe Anotado, Jr. and Staff Sgt. Edgardo Osorio for kidnapping and serious illegal detention of University of the Philippines students Sherlyn Cadapan and Karen Empeño in 2006.
