Palmerston North shopping centre evacuated after 'suspicious' fireA fire that caused the evacuation of a busy Palmerston North shopping centre is being treated as suspicious. Three fire trucks, from the Palmerston North and Milson stations, rushed to theDowntown shopping centre about 3pm, as movie-watchers and cafe-goers were forced outside. Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman Jan Wills said a rubbish bin fire in one of the building's public toilets caused the alarm. Following the evacuation, the fire service shut down the sprinkler and ventilated the bathroom, she said. Firefighters left the shopping centre just before 4pm.
