MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang expressed hope lawmakers will rethink their decision not to ban political dynasties in the proposed federalism charter after the President Duterte-backed consultative committee (Concom) rejected the bill passed by the House of Representatives. He expressed apprehension that the power of politicians who belong to political dynasties would be unlimited, which could arise if the House version is approved. When he ran for office, Duterte espoused the shift to a federal form of government with the view that it would address national economic and power imbalances. 15 that seeks, among others, a shift to a federal form of government, the removal of term limits for lawmakers and lifting of the anti-political dynasty provision in the 1987 Constitution. He said that only politicians with political dynasties, cartels and monopolies will likely benefit from the Congress’ federal charter.
