Painless surgery blasts tumour without incision

Doctors feared that Anna Szot-Czetowicz would have lost part of her lung, but she recovered immediately without discomfortA 65-year-old Londoner has become the world’s first patient to have a cancerous lung tumour blasted away in painless, pioneering surgery that did not even puncture the skin. Anna Szot-Czetowicz recovered immediately without any pain or discomfort and was ready to go home the next day, after surgeons at St Bartholomew’s Hospital used GPS-style technology to reach the tumour on her lung, without using cuts or needles, or even needing to puncture the lung. After inserting a catheter through the patient’s mouth, surgeons were able to use 3D images to guide them to the tumour and blast it with a targeted dose of microwave energy. Footage shows the tumour exploding, not unlike the target of a missile strike, or an enemy in a computer game.
