The shrunken carcass of the four-year-old male was found in the Betla range of PTR, 3.5km from the nearest watering hole. Betla is in north division, where high altitude causes water to run off more easily and hence, the area is generally avoided by elephants. Singh, reacting to a high court query on Tuesday, said the state's lone tiger abode had enough water for animals. If water was available, why did the calf die of thirst on May 3 (not May 4 as reported)? On water management in PTR, Singh said there were 131 artificial troughs across PTR - 68 up north and the rest down south.
