PPI for local production rises 6.5% on year in December 2016


KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 31): The producer price index (PPI) for local production increased 6.5% year-on-year (y-o-y) for the month of December 2016, driven mainly by 34.5% growth in the agriculture, forestry and fishing index, followed by mining (11.6%), manufacturing (3.7%), electricity and gas (3.5%), and water supply (0.4%). The Department of Statistics Malaysia in a statement today said the PPI for local production by stage of processing (SOP) increased 6.5% y-o-y amid increases in the crude materials, intermediate materials, supplies and components, and finished goods indices. On a month-on-month (m-o-m) basis, the PPI for local production grew 3.6% for the month, contributed by a 19.3% increase in the mining index. The agriculture, forestry and fishing index posted the biggest gain of 7.9% m-o-m, followed by manufacturing (1.8%), electricity and gas (0.4%) and water supply (0.4%).
