PIL seeking e-bill system in GST: Madras HC directs secretaries to PMO, finance ministry to file counters

MADURAI: The Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Monday directed the secretaries to the Prime Minister Office and the finance ministry to file counters to a public interest litigation seeking introduction of e-bill in the Goods and Services Tax ( GST ) system. When the PIL filed by KK Ramesh came up for hearing before the division bench of justices M Venugopal and Abdul Qudhose, the petitioner told the court that there were chances that commercial establishments would cheat government in making GST payments. The government could avoid it by introducing e-bill method, he said. There are lots of irregularities and confusions in levying GST on the inter transit goods and in collecting the same. Taxes are levied in various rates -- that is, 5 %, 12 %, 18 % and 28 %. Traders could cheat the government in many ways.Hotels are following simple method by collecting Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) 9 % and State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) 9 % in the bills. But there was no action, he said. The court gave time till November 14 for the central government side to file counters.
