Share TweetBy Alex San JuanAttached agencies of the Department of Science and Technology inked a memorandum of understanding with Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) on a real-time satellite website collaboration for disaster mitigation in the country. Under the MOU, Japan will mirror its Himawari-8 real-time website to the Philippines, which shows satellite imagery for real-time weather forecasting, tropical cyclone analysis, as well as for research purposes. The real-time website, which is now established on a local mirror at www.himawari.asti.dost.gov.ph, will also be accessible on smartphones through an application that will be launched soon. Based on the MOU, the parties will also be collaborating in information and communications technology particularly in disaster mitigation and disaster resilient society through exchange of information, and staff and researchers, a promotion of joint research, and a joint organization of technical meetings and workshops.
