PH chessers climb to 23rd spot

The Philippines crushed South Africa, 3.5-.5, to tally eight match points from four wins and a loss. Once more, Eugene Torre carried the team and was supported by Ino Sadorra, who manned top board after missing play for three rounds. Sadorra, who complained of sudden headaches after Round 2, was cleared by doctors Tuesday to play the fifth round. Torre, 64, has 4.5 points out of five rounds making him the team’s “lifesaver”, as he was described by Jayson Gonzales, captain of the women’s team. The Philippine women team crushed Algeria, 4-0, to land to 27th place on seven match points on three wins, one draw and one loss.
