Over a quarter of Pakistan’s women workforce fired or suspended amid lockdown: report

ISLAMABAD: More than a quarter of Pakistan’s women workforce have been fired or suspended as the lockdown to curb the novel coronavirus came into effect, while a majority of those laid off reported they had not been paid their dues, a survey report released Friday indicated. Of the women who were terminated, the largest proportion was of factory workers. Separately, 51% of the total respondents who were laid off said they were awaiting their dues to be cleared by their employers. A mere 28% of the women workforce were able to apply for support under the PTI-government’s Ehsaas Emergency Cash Programme. Of the total respondents, almost half — 49% — said there were no measures to protect employees from the pandemic at their offices.
