Outpouring of grief over death of head teacher

A primary school head teacher and a Holocaust survivor are among the latest British victims to have died after contracting coronavirus. Wendy Jacobs, who had worked at Roose Primary School in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, for several years, died after being treated in intensive care at Furness General Hospital. Her death at the weekend has prompted some to demand coronavirus testing for teachers in schools, echoing similar calls from NHS staff. In a letter to parents Fred Chatfield, the school’s chairman of governors, expressed his “great sadness” and described the death of Mrs Jacobs, 58, as a huge loss. He said: “This is devastating news for our school and nursery community and all our thoughts and sympathies are with her family.
