The use of any sort of garden hose has been banned in Tararua. Tararua residents are banned from using watering hoses in all of the district's towns except Eketāhuna. The total ban covers the use of garden sprinklers, soak hoses, attended and hand-held hoses. The district council imposed some water restrictions in December in a bid to head off the need for more severe controls, but the need for water conservation had become urgent as drier-than-usual conditions persisted.
