All pet dogs are required to be microchipped with up-to-date contact details or owners risk a fine Christopher Furlong/Getty ImagesAt least 12 dogs a day face being put down because their owners fail to keep their microchip details up to date. Figures released by Dogs Trust show that 37,000 lost and abandoned dogs were taken into local authority kennels last year. One in eight was a pet that could not be returned and risked being destroyed because outdated microchip information meant that their owners could not be traced. After surveying local authorities across the UK, the charity found that 3,463 stray dogs were put down between April last year and this March while a further 37,283 remained unclaimed.
