On February 8, 2020, Irish voters consigned our traditional century-old political party system to the dustbin of history. It took 140 days, or almost five months, to install a historic coalition of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party on June 27. Two of the coalition parties, Fianna Fáil and the Green Party, are now struggling with deep internal divisions. The other partner, Fine Gael, is in better shape internally, in large part due to consistently good opinion poll rankings. Our politics have profoundly changed and now our politicians must also change.
