Yet exactly how much warmer the Earth will get is also in human hands, according to a landmark climate report released Monday. Scientists at the time drew that line in the sand, arguing we needed to stay far below two degrees to prevent the worst impacts of climate change. “It’s a slow, kind of inexorable problem,” says John Fyfe, a senior scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, who was one of the lead authors on the report. The ripple effects of climate change will be particularly felt in the North, where sea ice is declining rapidly and winters are warmer than ever. While this latest report is the IPCC’s starkest warning yet, there are also “notes of optimism,” according to Nathan Gillett, an author on the report and research scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.
