While we realised the motives of the water bottle distributors, I do wonder if the vast number who collected water bottles did so too, and still gladly compromised their privacy! India does not have a clear legal definition of what constitutes personal information, and lacks a robust and comprehensive data protection law. Moreover, we need to increase awareness among common citizens on data privacy. The next time you connect to free Wi-Fi, most probably your personal data are at risk and accurate records of where your phone has been, collected. We chose not to take the water bottles after all.
