A federal judge has ordered North Korea to pay the parents half of Otto Warmbier half a billion pounds in a default judgement awarded on Christmas Eve. Judge Beryl Howell wrote: “North Korea is liable for the torture, hostage taking, and extrajudicial killing of Otto Warmbier and the injuries to his mother and father". Their son was arrested in North Korea in January 2016 for allegedly stealing a political poster. Before he travelled to North Korea on a five-day trip Otto was a "healthy, athletic student", according to the lawsuit. There is no mechanism for how North Korea will pay the money.
