Ottawa commits to new First Nations child welfare funding

That’s when the human rights tribunal made its first ruling that Ottawa’s underfunding of child and family services for Indigenous communities was discriminatory. Philpott, who just last week hosted an emergency summit on child welfare with Indigenous leaders, said Thursday that the government will obey the tribunal’s order to fund these services immediately. The tribunal ordered the government to start paying for the “real needs” of child and family services agencies that work on reserves. Philpott said she expects details of the new funding for 105 First Nations child and family services agencies in the upcoming federal budget. She said the funding announced by Philpott is a step forward, but pointed out that the tribunal ordered the government to do this in its first ruling on First Nations child welfare in January 2016.
